Our faith demands us to act for a just clean energy future.
Our mission: To build on the stated commitments of The United Methodist Church to faithfully address climate change. To act by screening out fossil fuels from our investments at all levels of the church. And to invest in goods and services that support an immediate and just transition to a clean energy future.
Fossil Free UMC is part of a growing network of United Methodists working within our denomination to promote the transformation taking place through the global fossil fuel divestment movement. This involves shifting investments away from polluting coal, oil, and gas and instead investing in just and sustainable forms of renewable power.
The teachings and traditions of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, have at their core a love for God’s creation, an emphasis on social holiness, and the vision of the world as our parish. These Wesleyan teachings challenge us to embody our commitment to love and justice in the context of the many climate-related threats of our time. They inform us as we work together for a just transformation to a fossil-free future.

General Conference 2024
Fossil Free UMC brought divestment resolutions and a moral voice to General Conference in 2016. In 2024, the movement is growing.
The next General Conference will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina on April 23 through May 3, 2024. In 2024, just as in 2016, the people of the United Methodist Church will ask its denominational leaders, delegates, and bishops to commit to the righteous act of divestment.
With your prayers and support, members of Fossil Free UMC will be there, advocating for the passage of this petition. We are hopeful that this may be the moment when our beloved United Methodist Church will rise to the challenge, stop funding the fossil fuel industry, not be led astray by false solutions, and invest instead in projects and technologies that will lead us to a just and sustainable clean energy future.
Read more about why this is important in Turn Over the Tables, more about our origins in Just and Free! Fossil Free UMC, and more about about our 2016 efforts in Throwback Thursday.

As United Methodists and as followers of Jesus, we should have no part in investments in fossil fuels, which pollute the atmosphere with persistent greenhouse gases that cause climate change, bring disaster upon people, harm creation, and foreclose on hopes for the future. Rather, we call for investing in renewable, life-sustaining, and regenerative enterprises. By doing so, we step away from institutional complicity in destroying God’s creation, affirm our deepest values, and offer a vision of hope for a transformed world.
