“Divestment with Fossil Free UMC” Movement Cafe Video

Fossil Fuel Divestment is the focus of this first Movement Cafe of 2025. This conversation connects the dots as to why divestment is an important tool to fight climate change. Fossil Free UMC member Jaydee Hanson speaks about how divestment would help the United Methodist Church act on what it has been calling for in regards to climate change. Rev. Sharon Delgado, Convener of the Fossil Free UMC team, speaks to the potentials and pitfalls of net zero. UCC pastor, author, and climate activist Rev. Jim Antal discusses the theological imperative and importance of divestment. Julia Frisbie, Executive Director of the Northwest Faith Foundation walks us through Wespath’s low-carbon funds and encourages our church and annual conferences to divest.

Julia Frisbie

Julia Frisbie brings a wealth of experience in management, communications, and fundraising within the United Methodist Church. A Stanford graduate, she began her career at UMCOR. She led the Greater Northwest Area’s 1.2-million-dollar Imagine No Malaria campaign, and played a significant role at General Conference 2016. Frisbie has served at the Faith Foundation Northwest for the past five years, and as the Executive Director since 2023.

Jim Antal

Jim Antal serves as Special Advisor on Climate Justice to the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. Antal’s 2023 book, CLIMATE CHURCH, CLIMATE WORLD – Revised and Updated, is being read by hundreds of churches. From 2006-2018, Antal led the 350 UCC churches in Massachusetts as their Conference Minister and President. He has preached on climate change since 1988 in over 400 settings and has engaged in non-violent civil disobedience on numerous occasions.

Rev. Sharon Delgado

Rev. Sharon Delgado is an ordained United Methodist minister, speaker, and activist. She is author of Shaking the Gates of Hell, Love in a Time of Climate Change, and The Cross in the Midst of Creation. Currently, she is the convener of Fossil Free UMC, working in hope that the UMC will choose to divest from fossil fuels.

Jaydee Hanson

Jaydee Hanson is the policy director for Center for Food Safety and former staff executive for environmental justice, General Board of Church and Society. He serves on the board of Caretakers of God’s Creation and is a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, in Arlington, Virginia. Hanson was on the original Climate team of the World Council of Churches and is a United Methodist EarthKeeper.

  1. Excellent Summary of the FossilFree UMC program.

    If we are going to have a display on april 19th, I suggest including some of the handouts that explain the emphasis on investing in fossil free resources.
