Ending Israeli occupation and genocide is a climate justice issue.

All over the world, struggles against colonialism and the destruction of God’s creation by corporations for the sake of profit are intrinsically linked.  Fossil fuel giant Chevron supports Israel’s occupation and genocidal war against Palestinians while committing human rights abuses and destroying ecosystems in countries around the world.

That is why Fossil Free UMC has responded to the Palestinian BDS National Committee’s call to support the Chevron Boycott. Climate justice movements and supporters of Palestinian rights worldwide are joining forces to hold Chevron accountable for helping fund and profiting from both Israeli apartheid and global environmental destruction.

Chevron runs natural gas extraction and pipelines off the shore of Palestine/Israel. Israel depends heavily on fossil gas for electricity, and Chevron is the largest producer for Israel, illegally exploiting Palestinian natural resources. Chevron is also providing millions of dollars in tax revenues to Israel. As a major economic partner of the state, Chevron is directly implicated in Israeli apartheid and the genocidal assault on Gaza over the last 16 months.

The impacts of this partnership reflect Chevron’s worldwide behavior.

Chevron is one the most destructive oil companies, ravaging land, poisoning rivers and streams, destroying communities, and financing violence. The company’s activities have played a role in the destruction of marginalized people’s homes, resources, and livelihoods in at least 30 countries. Chevron has been sued repeatedly for its involvement in violence against indigenous communities, including accusations of genocide and torture.

Watch the Recording Above to learn how and why United Methodists and many others across diverse justice movements are answering the call to #BoycottChevron.

Our panel includes leaders from Fossil Free UMC, the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction movement, American Friends Service Committee, and US Campaign for Palestinian Rights.

  1. Hello, I have been very engaged in getting my church to take advantage of all the clean energy financial incentives (aka rebates) and I’ve spent a HUGE amount of time getting upgraded lighting and insulation at my church to chip away and do our little part to act about the truly dire climate emegency engulfing our earth. I’ve circulated FossilFreeUMC’s petition at my church and attended your webinars about this, with some of my time on this Earth that I will never get back. And for the life of me I cannot understand why it is any sort of moral or common sense issue to simply DIVEST the UMC’s stock portfolio from fossil fuels. This is insane. There aren’t two sides to this. Science has been clear since the 1970s that fossil fuels drive climate change, which will make this Earth uninhabitable by almost all living organisms. WHY is all this “debate” still going on in the UMC? I do not understand. There must be fossil fuel industry lobbying and incentives involved for this to be the unending issue requiring so many people’s time to be deliberating and “learning” and “deciding” and etc etc etc I’m unsubscribing from all of this and I want you to know that this is crazy. Just CRAZY to ask people to devote their time on this earth to your neverending debate. The science is clear. The Methodist leadership is failing all Methodists and they’re failing God’s divine creation, remarkable planet. I am so disappointed with all of this. -Cathryn

    • Well said. More and more people who are feeling as fed up, disappointed, frustrated, and angry as you are with the UMC as a whole not seeing how obvious it is that we should divest. I am sorry to see you go.
